On Wednesday 16th
July "The Feeling" were issued a challenge by Capital
Radio's Johnny Vaughan and Denise Van Outen to shoot, edit
and grade a complete music video for their latest release
"Join with us". Sonic was called in to make sure
it could be done.
When looking at how to shoot the music video the producers
kept coming back to the Red Camera as the only sensible option
to fulfil their needs. One of the largest obstacles was the
need to edit using Avid on Intel based PC's.
We looked at various methods of getting the footage from the
camera to the editors in the shortest time possible. One of
which involved capturing from a second camera body direct
to the Avid from the 720p playback. Initial tests showed promise
but without the ability to link back to the original files
due to lack of timecode or have access to the RAW data the
video would have limited options further down the line compared
to editing from the cameras original footage.
Eventually we downscaled the footage in a more traditional
manner using Redcine, after much testing with codecs to allow
us to provide a decent quality within the timeframe. Small
adjustments to the footage were applied where necessary, with
a Scratch system on standby if more complex modifications
were required. Each shot was written directly to external
harddrives and handed to the editors who were also on set.
The footage could then be imported directly into their Avids
and edited online.
Essentially the whole delivery was a matter of logistics and
thankfully it ran smoothly throughout. We were able to process
over 1 hour and 45 minutes worth of footage and by the end
of the shoot approximately 75% of the video had already been
cut.
The band eventually handed the edited and graded music video
over to Johnny Vaughan and Denise Van Outen the next morning
with time to spare!
