Workflow Example
We recommend when using the camera
that you shoot at its highest resolution which is 4K RAW. This way you have the
same depth of field as 35mm film. You are also using the whole image sensor of
the RED camera maximising the amount of information that is captured. If you
need a 1080p or pal output then down sample in RedCine or Scratch. This will
give the optimum picture quality and allow for greater freedom in post to adjust
colours and obtain clean keys from green screen footage.
Workflow Stages
1) Record footage to RedDrive
or Compact Flash at 4K.
2) When the media is full or a take needs
to be viewed at 4K using the onset data management simply
swap for another and continue shooting. Footage from the
removed media is then reviewed in either Redcine
or Scratch, it is then simultaneously copied and verfified
to two separate external drives.
Footage is also later backed up to tape for archive.
3) One Hard drive is handed to the offline
editor which contains the 4K redcode files and quicktime
proxies. The Proxy files can be opened in Final Cut Pro after
installing the RedCode Plugin from
4) Once the edit is complete an EDL is generated
of the final sequence.
5) We then take the EDL in to our Scratch
system and conform 4k redcode raw files. This process
is done instantly.
6) We can then colour grade the redcode
raw files in its native 4K format, without the time and cost
of converting footage. We can apply a number of secondries
and masks to the footage.
7) When everyone is happy with the final grade we
can convert the final sequence as HD or SD to tape for
broadcast or as 2K dpx files to be recorded back to film
for theatrical release.
There are many other ways of posting Red footage.
Sonic consults with our clients on a project by project
basis dependent on the requirements and the post facility
intended for use.
With the RED workflow if you don't have the money to
online your cinema release in 4K straight away you can
make a lower resolution master, for example a pal DVD.
You can send this off to potential investors to view.
When you have raised the extra money and need to finish
your film in 4K for cinema release you always have the
projects EDL and the original 4K raw files, from this
you can produce a master for cinema release.
